A Delhi police officer on night duty uses a service revolver to shoot himself in the head

New Delhi: While working at a picket in the Kotla Mubarakpur neighborhood of south Delhi, an assistant sub-inspector with the Delhi Police is suspected of shooting himself in the head, authorities said on Saturday.

According to an official, ASI Ramavtar and Sub-Inspector Prem Singh were assigned to nighttime picket duty at BP Marg.

“At 3 am, Ramavtar informed Prem Singh that he wanted to rest for 10 minutes and went to sit in his car which was parked near the barricade,” according to the official.

“After a while, Prem Singh returned, and Ramavtar was discovered dead. The official said, “He had a gunshot wound to the head. His service pistol was also discovered laying close by.

Another officer claimed Ramavtar, a native of Mahendergarh, Haryana, joined the service in 1993 and was now assigned in Kotla Mubarakpur police station.

The officer said that the ASI’s family has been notified of his passing. He said, “The reason behind the “extraordinary step” is being investigated.”
