AAP is once again backing Rinku to retain the Jalandhar LS seat

Sushil Rinku, the sitting member of the Aam Aadmi Party from the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, may face a rerun of the election in less than a year as the party decides to place another wager on him for the next Lok Sabha elections.

Since contesting the Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll in May of last year, Rinku has not had time to relax since he was aware that he would only have ten months to establish his credentials in front of the 16.17 lakh people in the constituency. As the party’s lone Lok Sabha MP, Rinku often had to travel back and forth between Jalandhar and Delhi to attend rallies and party functions.

He continued to make headlines during the Parliamentary Monsoon Session of the previous year, when he was suspended for tossing papers into the House well and hurling them at Speaker Om Birla. He protested for a long time outside the parliament before putting shackles around his body.

Rinku has a history of protesting, even during his time as a council member. He was a fighter in his younger days. In the MC House, he belonged to the Dynamic Group, which was established in opposition to his own governing party, Congress, in 2012. Following the death of his father, a fellow council member, Rinku began his career in Congress in 2006 as a council member from his ward in Basti Danishmandan in an MC bypoll. In 2007 and 2017, his spouse, Sunita Rinku, also held the position of councillor. He was elected as a Jalandhar West MLA in 2017, but was defeated in 2022. In order to run for the parliamentary bypoll last year and win, he moved from the Congress to the AAP.

As the party’s only sitting member of the Lok Sabha, Rinku’s candidacy was anticipated much sooner. Everyone speculated that his identity would be revealed during AAP national leader Arvind Kejriwal’s recent visit to Jalandhar. However, it was eventually included in the top eight candidates’ list today.

With the announcement of his candidacy once again, all eyes will be on how Jalandhar West MLA Sheetal Angural, his fiercest opponent in the party, responds to the news. A few months ago, Angural challenged Rinku to run for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat again in a video post on Facebook.
