AJP Demands Removal of Biren Singh Government Due to Manipur Conflict

Following the release of a video showing two women being paraded in the nude in the ethnically divided state of Manipur, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) called for the resignation of the N Biren Singh administration on Friday. The event and the continuing instability in the state were blamed on the Manipurian administration by the opposition party in Assam.

A video taken on May 4 of two women from one of the Manipur’s warring groups being paraded nude and assaulted by a crowd from the opposing side emerged on Wednesday. On Thursday, the claimed key suspect was taken into custody. The event has received strong criticism from people all throughout the nation.

“The event demonstrates that the state is in complete chaos, and prompt action is required. According to AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, the failure of the intelligence system, the authorities’ complicity, and the apathy of the state and federal governments hurt all of the nation’s population, not only the residents of Manipur.

Serious concerns about the state’s administration and the responsiveness of the authorities have been raised by the Manipur Police’s apparent presence at the site of the tragedy without offering the victims appropriate protection, he said. We urge President Droupadi Murmu to provide the Manipur administration and Prime Minister Narendra Modi the necessary instructions so that they can act right now to bring about peace and normality, Gogoi added.

Since May 3, when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s quest for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, more than 160 people have died and numerous more have been wounded as a result of ethnic violence throughout the state.

The tribal population of Manipur, which includes the Naga and Kuki people, makes about 40% of the total population and is mostly concentrated in the hill regions, whereas Meiteis make up around 53% of the population and dwell primarily in the Imphal Valley.
