As a result of the rescue effort in Virudhunagar, Tennessee, 633 individuals have been moved to shelters

One day after being stuck at the Sundaramahalingam temple in Virudhunagar due to severe rain that began on Sunday, 120 pilgrims were rescued from the Sathuragiri hills on Monday. The devotees were moved to the Thaniparai foothills via a cooperative effort by the forest department, fire and rescue services, and other agencies.

Over 100 devotees who remained on the temple grounds were rescued later in the day, in addition to the 16 who were saved earlier on Monday after their unsuccessful effort to descend the hill left them stuck. Unaffected region residents were sent back home. Hundreds of people were left stuck in the region after severe rains that started on Sunday afternoon, including the devotees. After Monday’s average morning rainfall of 148.28 mm and afternoon total of 164.4 mm, conditions quickly deteriorated.

Water levels in the dams at Vembakottai and Irukkangudi surpassed their capacity in the meanwhile, necessitating the discharge of excess water. The residents in the surrounding districts were advised not to approach the waterbodies. The area also had many lakes and streams overflowing. Up to 633 individuals from all throughout the district, including 155 children, were housed in 14 shelter camps that the district government established.

Sources claim that because of the increased water influx, a stream in O Muthulapuram hamlet, which is under the Virudhunagar Panchayat Union, spilled and invaded nearby homes. Following their rescue, more than twenty locals were left stranded. In a different event, the fire and rescue services also saved the lives of two old ladies from the hamlet of Avarampatti, which is close to Rajapalayam.

“A 29-year-old Guhanparai man got stuck in the floodwaters while driving a four-wheeler with his three-year-old kid. They were rescued with the assistance of locals and police, according to official sources. In addition, floodwater in Kalkurichi trapped three families, totaling twenty-one individuals, as it infiltrated their homes and neighboring regions. The cops came to their aid later. In a different incidence, a 20-year-old pregnant lady with pains was carried by the villagers and taken to the Government Hospital in Kovilpatti with the assistance of an ambulance near a flooded Sattur.
