As summer demand triples, a beer crisis looms over sweltering Bengaluru, with pubs discontinuing their 2+1 offer

As pubs and brewers struggle to meet the growing demand for beer during the sweltering summers, Bengaluru residents may soon face a “beer shortage.”

According to media sources, brewers are confronting restricted supply due to ongoing manufacturing after the recent spike in beer purchases. Consequently, there are now restocking delays for retail establishments.

Aside from the summer, other producers have also attributed the growing demand for the beverage to the fruit season and several long weekends.

A spokesman for a significant Marathahalli brewery said in an interview with The New Indian Express that this year’s supply and consumption had surpassed their projections, something for which they were unprepared.

He went on, “We usually introduce fruit-flavored beer in the summer, and sales are largely dependent on fruits like pineapples and mangoes.” Due to subpar mangoes this year, fruit beer sales decreased, leading consumers to choose ordinary beer instead.

The spokesman said that a significant factor in the increased sales was the heat, the IPL season, and the number of visitors over long weekends. Additionally, he said that 30,000 liters had been sold so far this year, compared to 9,000 liters sold the year before.

“Almost all customers choose multiple beer orders over other beverages, resulting in a 40% increase in sales.” The operational head of Gilly’s Restobar said that delays in brewers’ orders had made managing sales difficult.

Additionally, he warned that if this trend persisted, they could have to temporarily halt weekend promotions, such as buy two, get 1 on all beer brands.

“The current temperatures often make it difficult to maintain cool fermentation temperatures and adequately cool the wort, which is the liquid solution of extracted grains and a sugar source that brewers create and ultimately feed to beer yeasts after the boil,” stated the operational head of another brewery situated on the city’s Residency Road.

It is taking time to adjust to new methods that may provide a temporary remedy since we haven’t had such weather impacts, she said.
