Before the G20 Summit, authorities in Delhi will decide on measures to address waterlogging and flooding

In case of rain during the two-day event in Delhi next month, a strategy has been put in place to cope with waterlogging at the G20 site and other significant locations, police said on Thursday. The event is planned to take place from September 9 to September 10 at the Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition-Convention Center in Pragati Maidan.

The plan calls for the use of a battery of heavy-duty 50 horsepower tractor-mounted pumps to remove excess water, heavy water jetting machines on mechanical road sweeping (MRS) vehicles to remove mud and silt from off-road sides, and a “super sucker” to clear clogged drains and sewer lines.

Two 12-hour shifts of an IAS and DANICS probationary officer, an assistant, and a sanitary inspector will deploy the equipment continuously.

A tunnel connecting to Ring Road at Pragati Maidan, a key Summit location, was inundated with water after last month’s torrential rains, requiring the LG to come up with a graded water evacuation plan.

A tunnel connecting to Ring Road at Pragati Maidan, a key Summit location, was inundated with water after last month’s torrential rains, requiring the LG to come up with a graded water evacuation plan.

The plan intended for water to be collected in little reservoirs with a 1,000 liter capacity each, then pumped into reservoirs with a 2,000 liter capacity, and finally into reservoirs with a 50,000 liter capacity.

Officials claim that after being collected, the water is poured down a nearby sewer and released into the Yamuna.

According to a Raj Niwas official, Delhi LG V K Saxena visited various flood-prone areas on Wednesday to evaluate readiness.

At a recent G20 preparation review meeting, the LG gave officials the go-ahead to create a contingency plan to deal with heavy waterlogging around the summit’s venue, Pragati Maidan, as well as Rajghat, the hotels for delegates, and other key locations, in the event that the city experiences a significant downpour.
