BJP says Sandeshkhali Shajahan Sheikh is now under “legal protection.”

Shajahan Sheikh’s detention on Thursday was referred to by the BJP as a “legal protection” granted by the West Bengal police.

The state’s governing Trinamool Congress (TMC) came under fire from BJP national spokesman Sudhanshu Trivedi for failing to prosecute Sheikh with the crimes that women in Sandeshkhali had brought against him.

The complainant ladies have accused several other party members and the local TMC strongman of robbing them sexually and stealing their land.

After fleeing for 55 days during which the Sandeshkhali ladies led violent demonstrations and a bitter political brawl, Sheikh was apprehended in the early hours of Thursday.

Sandeshkhali’s split: TMC chief Shahjahan Sheikh was detained and given a ten-day police prison period.
According to Trivedi, Sheikh was detained in connection with a crowd connected to him that was violently attacking Enforcement Directorate (ED) personnel.

At a news conference, the BJP leader questioned why the West Bengal police had not turned over his custody to the central agency in this particular instance.

He said that rather than being placed under arrest, the footage of Sheikh walking forward with police pursuing him seemed to show that he was being guided.

According to Trivedi, the TMC leader was allegedly on the run and was receiving “secular protection” at the time. However, he is now protected by the law.
