By 3 a.m. on Friday, 37,599 Ganesh idols had been submerged, according to the BMC

Thousands of idols of the elephant-headed deity were submerged in water bodies, including manmade ponds, in Mumbai on Thursday as the 10-day Ganeshotsav came to an end in front of a sea of worshippers.

According to authorities, the well-known Lalbaugcha Raja idol of the city, whose procession began at 11.30 am on Thursday, was submerged at approximately 9.15 am on Friday.

The Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reports that up till 3 am on Friday, more than 37,599 idols were submerged around the city.

On Thursday night, a 16-year-old kid drowned in the water near the Juhu beach.

The 10-day celebration came to an end on Thursday when several Ganesh mandals in the city began processions to immerse the deity’s statues amid drumming and shouts of “Ganpati Bappa Morya.”

On Friday, at 9.15 am, the Lalbaugcha Raja Ganesh idol was submerged in the sea off Girgaum Chowpatty after a parade that began at 11.30 am.

31,322 of the 37,599 idols that were submerged in water till three in the morning on Friday were Gauri idols, 5,840 were’sarvajanik’ (public), and 437 were family Ganapati idols.

Notably, 11,013 idols have been submerged in the artificial ponds that the city authority has constructed. According to the official, there were 158 statues of Goddess Gauri, 734 Sarvajanik, and 10,121 domestic Ganpati idols.

One of the largest celebrations in Mumbai and many other regions of Maharashtra is Ganeshotsav. During the 10-day festivities, Lord Ganapati idols are taken home and placed in pandals. This year, it began on September 19 with Ganesh Chaturthi and finished on September 28 with Anant Chaturdashi.
