Congress on the Centre’s allowing ED to share information with GSTN: We’ll Oppose This Anti-Trader Policy of the Modi Administration

On Tuesday, the Congress said that it will resist the Narendra Modi administration’s “anti-trader” stance and claimed that, as a result of the Centre’s most recent change to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the Enforcement Directorate would be able to arrest any trader.

The Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, was amended by the Union Finance Ministry through a notification, adding GSTN, which manages the Goods and Services Tax’s technology infrastructure, to the list of entities with which ED will share information. This led to the opposition party’s assertion.

As a result of the GST being included under the PMLA, Congress’ head of media and publicity Pawan Khera said that the ED would be allowed to detain any dealer.

He said that the Congress has been vocal about the need to streamline the GST.

Khera said in a tweet, “We will oppose this anti-trader policy of the Modi government, as this endangers millions of traders who are subject to a convoluted GST regime.”

The Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, has been amended, and GSTN is now placed on the list of organizations with which the ED will exchange information.
