Data: 99% End to Stone Pelting in J&K, 60% Drop in Force Casualties, No Explosives Found

According to statistics obtained by News18, occurrences of stone-pelting have decreased by 98% in Jammu & Kashmir during the first half of 2020.

According to the statistics, security force casualties decreased by 60% within the same time period, while IEDs continue to be a problem.

The G20 summit was also conducted in Srinagar this year. The Union Home Ministry monitors J&K and has regular meetings to examine the state of law and order there. The Union Territory’s success may be attributed to Home Minister Amit Shah’s leadership, who routinely assesses security and development concerns.

The data shows that 324 instances of stone-pelting were reported by local authorities during the first half of 2020. Such incidences decreased the next year, dropping to 179. The total recorded incidences during the same time in 2022 and 2023 were 50 and 3, respectively.

Another encouraging aspect is that since 2020, the number of security personnel slain in J&K has drastically decreased, falling from 32 to 11.

The amount of explosives and grenades recovered from Jammu and Kashmir has also decreased. Security personnel seized over 68 kilos of explosives in 2021. This year’s first half of the number is zero. The number of recovered grenades decreased from 266 in 2020 to 83 in 2023. Data showed that from 2020 to the first part of 2023, 728 grenades and 102.75 kg of explosives were seized from J&K.

The number of terrorists in the Union Territory has decreased as a consequence of the security operations carried out by J&K-based troops and local police. This also reduced the number of recovered weapons from 246 to 73, suggesting that there may be less weapons in the Valley. The information at hand indicates that 770 weapons were found between 2020 and the first half of 2023.

IEDs continue to be a significant issue despite the encouraging trends, as the recoveries have increased. In contrast to 2020, which saw no IED recoveries, 2021 saw the recovery of five IEDs. This number increased to 17 in 2022 and to 15 in 2023.

The home ministry said that the government has a policy of zero tolerance against terrorism and that the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir has greatly improved during the most recent session of Parliament.

In order to foil any effort by terrorists to strike in Jammu and Kashmir, a strong security and intelligence system is in place. Further measures taken by the government to thwart terrorist attacks and protect civilian lives in the Valley include group security in the form of static guards, round-the-clock checking at ‘Nakas’ at strategic points, night patrolling and area dominance, identification of vulnerable spots, security arrangements through the appropriate deployment of police, army, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), and intensified Cordon and Search Operations, according to a report by MHA.

The government has established a well-coordinated, multi-pronged approach to combat cross-border infiltration, the ministry had recently said in Parliament. This entails the tactical deployment of forces at the international border (IB) and the line of control (LoC), the use of technology such as surveillance cameras, night vision cameras, heat sensing devices, etc., a multi-tiered deployment along the IB and the LoC, border fencing, the deployment of intelligence personnel to collect advance and target-oriented inputs on infiltration, ambushes, and foot patrol by the army and border security force (BSF), and the establishment of border police posts for the
