Domestic Help ‘Torture’: Girl’s Family Alleges Hot Tongs Hit Her

The family of a 10-year-old domestic assistant who was reportedly beaten by her employer in Dwarka, southwest Delhi, said the child was often struck with hot iron tongs and wanted harsh punishment for the perpetrator. They said the girl was forced to do home chores in addition to being paid to look after the kid of the accused couple.

For allegedly beating the child, police have detained Kaushik Bagchi (36), and his wife Poornima Bagchi (33). They said that Poornima is a pilot for a private aircraft while her spouse works for a different company.

Nearly 500 meters separate the flat where the victim was employed as a domestic helper from the JJ Colony where her family and other relatives reside.

Although the girl had been employed there for roughly two months, none of her family members were aware that she had experienced “abuse”.

According to the victim’s aunt, who observed her being physically assaulted by her employer on Wednesday morning as she was walking to work, Poornima thrashed the girl while she worked on the balcony.

She and others went to the couple’s home after noticing this, but they remained inside. The family said that they didn’t unlock the door and let the youngster out until after making a scene.

The little girl then told her family about her incident. “When she hurried out, she (the victim) was trembling and sobbing. Her face was bruised and swollen. She said that the other lady beat her up and made her do all the labor. The lady would strike her with hot tongs or an iron if she made a mistake. Her hands contain several burn wounds, according to the girl’s aunt.

According to the victim’s uncle, “We saw burn scars on her arms and other bodily parts. Her eyes were bruised as well. The girl was in a terrible state of mind. She was inconsolable and afraid.

The girl allegedly informed the victim’s uncle that she had been given stale food to eat often and had been left to hunger for the previous three to four days.

“The girl accidentally burned her garments a few days ago while ironing a woman’s outfit. When the lady (accused) saw that a portion of her uniform was burned, she burned her with the same iron, the prosecutor said.

According to the police, the victim’s medical assessment found that although some of the injuries were recent, the burn injuries were ancient. However, they said, it has not yet been established if the accused was responsible for the burn wounds during the time she lived with the couple. The girl’s family urged harsh punishment for the accused pair and stated they should learn their lesson so that no one would try to abuse a kid in such a way.

They said that the girl’s parents, who are from a hamlet in the Bihar region of Muzaffarpur, had returned to their home town as a result of an unexpected death in the family. According to the uncle, her parents will arrive in Delhi on Thursday. “It’s terribly awful what happened to the 10-year-old child. According to the youngster, the pair had been abusing her for the previous 15 days because she wasn’t doing her duties, he said.

The victim’s family approached the couple when the event was made public, and they also mistreated them. The victim’s relative, who also works in a neighboring residence, connected the kid to the couple’s home.

A fictitious video of the event showed the crowd assaulting the accused couple. Some of the ladies were also seen yanking and smacking the accused woman’s hair while she was wearing her uniform. In the video, Poornima can be heard apologizing as Kaushik protects her from the angry crowd, stating, “She would die…Dispatch her.
