Election commissioners are Sukhbir Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar, former officials

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a committee member and Congress politician, said on Thursday that Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar, two former bureaucrats, had been appointed as the new election commissioners by a body headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to reporters at his home shortly after the meeting concluded, Chowdhury stated that the names of Sandhu and Kumar were chosen by the majority of the very influential panel out of six candidates that were presented to them for the two ECs.

Nevertheless, he said that the Chief Justice of India ought to have been on the selection panel and that it was unclear how the Law Minister’s search committee, which is believed to have received over 200 applications, came up with the shortlist of six names.

Former officials Utpal Kumar Singh, Pradeep Kumar Tripathi, Gyanesh Kumar, Indevar Pandey, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, and Sudhir Kumar Gangadhar Rahate were among the six individuals who made the short list.

“Of the six names, the names of Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu were finalised for appointment as election commissioners,” he said.

Article 370 was revoked under Gyanesh Kumar’s supervision when he was in the Home Ministry.

Following Anup Chandra Pandey’s retirement on February 14 and Arun Goel’s abrupt resignation, there were openings.
