Farmers demonstrate: “Punjab and Haryana governments have blocked roads, not us

Leader of the farmers, Sarwan Singh Pandher, criticized the massive barricades at the borders of Punjab and Haryana on Tuesday, claiming that the state boundaries had become “international borders” in light of the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march.

He further claimed that farmers in Haryana were being harassed by the Manohar Lal Khattar administration.

Punjab and Haryana don’t seem to be two states. Ahead of the farmers’ march to Delhi, Pandher told reporters in the Fatehgarh Sahib area, “It seems they have become the international border.”

In addition to the reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act of 2013, the farmers are demanding a legal guarantee for MSP, the implementation of the recommendations made by the Swaminathan Commission, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, waivers of farm debt, the withdrawal of police cases, “justice” for the victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, and pensions for farmers.

Pandher said that while the government has blocked roads, the media has placed the responsibility on farmers for doing so.

“We still don’t state that we’re going to shut off roadways. The general secretary of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Pandher, said that highways had been blocked by the government for the last two to three days.

At the borders of Punjab and Haryana, concrete barriers have been built, he added.

Pandher said, “We grow foodgrains and we feed the country and they have grown a crop of nails” for us, alluding to the complex plans put in place by the Haryana government to keep farmers from relocating to the nation’s capital.

He said that Madhya Pradesh had imprisoned a large number of farmers who had pledged loyalty to them. Pandher attacked the Haryana administration, claiming that the state had become a “Kashmir valley.”

He said that the state administration had set up water cannons and sent police to every area to harass farmers.

Pandher mentioned the meeting with the Union Ministers and said that because it was not decisive, they made the decision to go on to Delhi.

According to him, farmers turned down the ministers’ proposals to create a committee because of their demands, particularly the need for a legislative guarantee of the minimum support price.

The discussion on the requests made by farmers, however, ended with no resolution.

Farmers from the Ambala-Shambhu, Khanauri-Jind, and Dabwali borders are to go to Delhi under the auspices of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.
