For water management, the Odisha government establishes an informatics center

In order to ensure effective water management and readiness for disasters, the government of Odisha has established a state center for water informatics. This center will collect, organize, and standardize micro-level hydrometeorological data from various water sector institutions.

Serving as a centralized repository, this center will make it easier to access, analyze, and share data with the national water informatics center. It will aggressively provide stakeholders with information on water via a variety of media, such as publications, internet platforms, and reports.

The department of Water Resources will be in charge of the informatics center’s operations. The national center will provide technical advice and assistance for the center, especially in the areas of data management and IT infrastructure.

“The state center will function as the main repository for extensive hydro-meteorological data, including vital indicators like water quality measurements, surface water availability, groundwater levels, and demand-supply dynamics. According to a department source, “its predictive modeling capabilities will also bolster disaster preparedness efforts, particularly through advanced flood forecasting techniques.” The facility will collaborate closely with the State Hydrological Data facility (SHDC) located at Rajiv Bhawan to optimise data integration endeavours in conjunction with hydro-meteorological research and development initiatives.

Domain experts from a number of other departments will assist in facilitating data sharing and validation, including the departments of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment, State Pollution Control Board, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water, Rural Development, and Energy.

In the meanwhile, to guarantee smooth operation and cooperation, the chief engineer and director of Ground Water Development cum-nodal officer under the National Hydrology Project (NHP) has been assigned the additional duty of director of the informatics center.
