IIT Bombay Opens Center of Excellence for Water Recycling and Desalination

A new center of excellence on membrane technologies for desalination, water recycling, and brine management been opened at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. The center’s new sophisticated instrumentation facilities and website were also showcased during the event. With the active involvement of scholars from India and throughout the globe, the center aims to develop methods and technologies for desalination, water reusing, and sustainable treatment. Additionally, the goal is to support the incubation and commercialization of newly created goods and technologies.

According to a formal release, “This Center represents a significant step towards ensuring safe, reliable and sustainable potable water sources for rural and urban India for industrial as well as domestic applications.”

The center’s director is Professor Swatantra Pratap Singh of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering. Professor Subhankar Karmarkar, Head, ESED, IIT Bombay, Professor Milind Atrey, Dean (R&D), IIT Bombay, Professor S. Sudarshan, Deputy Director (AIA), IIT Bombay, and Dr. Praveen Arora, Head, Water Technologies Cell, DST were present at the ceremony.

IIT Bombay said that the demand for non-conventional freshwater sources has grown as a result of the expanding population, climate change, and rising water constraints. Desalination facilities will be required in the future when new generation processes must integrate wastewater and saltwater to attain the required freshwater purity.

According to IIT Bombay, several states throughout the nation have proposed desalination plants to help with the nation’s water needs. Modern technology will be used at the new center to handle both current and future desalination issues.

IIT Bombay said in the statement that five IITs would work with different industries, NGOs, and other stakeholders to develop various desalination, water recycling, and brine management solutions. IIT Kharagpur, IIT Tirupati, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Hyderabad are the five IITs.

In July, IIT Bombay honored graduate and co-founder of Infosys Nandan Nilekani by renaming the institution’s iconic main building in his honor. The institute’s main structure would reportedly be known as the Nandan Nilekani Main Building. In June, Nilekani gave Rs 315 crore to his alma mater in honor of his 50 years of association with it.
