In Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar District, a group allegedly beats Dalit youth to death; eight people are arrested

In the Sagar area of Madhya Pradesh, a group of people allegedly fatally beat a young member of the Dalit caste as a result of a protracted disagreement. According to police, eight people have been taken into custody in relation to the event, which happened on Thursday. The governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has come under fire from the opposition Congress party and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BJP) for how it handled the issue.

The BJP responded by stating that prompt action had been taken and expressing doubt on the opposition’s viewpoint. Political debates have been sparked by the occurrence, especially given that the state’s assembly elections will take place later this year. Nitin Ahirwar, who was assaulted on Thursday and was between the ages of 18 and 20, passed away while he was being transported to a hospital in Sagar. The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act’s clauses were added to the accusations, which led to their elevation to murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, according to PTI.

The deceased had a history of judicial troubles, including accusations of extortion, violence, and theft, according to the authorities. The tragedy, which was the result of a long-standing grudge, first caused the victim’s family to postpone his funeral because they were impatient with how quickly people were being apprehended. However, they ultimately carried out the ceremonies when the district collector gave them promises of state backing. There have been eight individuals detained, and investigators are still looking for more suspects.

The victim’s sister said that pressure to reach a settlement in a previous harassment lawsuit led to her brother being viciously beaten. She had already filed a First Information Report (FIR) against four people in 2019, which led to their arrest, the police confirmed. The matter is still being reviewed by the court.

Mayawati of the BSP and Mallikarjin Kharge of the Congress both denounced the event, with Kharge pointing out apparent regional differences in how similar instances are handled. Kamal Nath, the leader of the MP Congress, also demanded financial support for the victim’s family. The BJP responded by reiterating its commitment to preserving the rule of law and its quick reaction to offenses that fall within its purview.

As different political groups discuss the situation, bringing up themes of social injustice and how to handle crimes against underprivileged people, tensions have increased.
