India Protecting People Forced Into Cambodian Cyberfraud Schemes

NEW DELHI: The Indian government said that it was bringing its nationals who had been coerced into working in Cambodia and coerced into engaging in cybercrime schemes to safety.

About 250 Indians have been saved and returned by the Indian embassy in Cambodia, including 75 in the previous three months, according to a statement released on Saturday by India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Randhir Jaiswal. The embassy is cooperating with Cambodian authorities in this endeavour.

In response to press allegations from India that claimed over 5,000 Indians were imprisoned in Cambodia and coerced into perpetrating cybercrimes against their countrymen, Jaiswal said.

“We are collaborating with agencies in India and Cambodia to take down the people behind these fraudulent schemes,” Jaiswal said.

According to the spokeswoman, the Indian government and its consulate in Cambodia have warned them about these frauds on many occasions.

A request for comment on Sunday was not immediately answered by the Cambodian embassy in India.
