Japan Earthquake: Prime Minister Modi Writes To His Japanese Equivalent, Offers Help

Delhi, New: Following Monday’s significant earthquake in Japan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote to Fumio Kishida on Thursday to offer his condolences to the families of the dead.
According to reports, Prime Minister Modi expressed his extreme sorrow and worry to the Japanese Prime Minister about the significant earthquake that devastated Japan on January 1, 2024.

PM Modi continued, saying, “I offer the families of the deceased my sincere condolences. We express our sympathy with the people of Japan who have been impacted by the tragedy.”

Prime Minister Modi further said “As a special strategic and global partner, India values its relationship with Japan, and is ready to extend all possible assistance at this hour.”

According to Kyodo News, a huge earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 rocked the Noto Peninsula and neighboring regions in central Japan on Monday, killing at least 64 people. In the areas affected by the earthquake, search and rescue efforts are still hindered by the debris and broken roadways.

Ishikawa Prefecture’s Wajima city has had structural damage and fires as a result of the earthquake. The whole scope of the catastrophe brought on by the strong earthquake is yet unclear, however.

More than twenty-four hours after the earthquake, access to the northern part of the isolated Noto Peninsula remained limited; nevertheless, on Tuesday, the Meteorological Agency of Japan lifted all tsunami warnings along parts of the country’s western coast.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told the reporters at a disaster emergency meeting on Tuesday that the place was inaccessible because of a damaged road.

25 structures, including residences, have fallen in Wajima City, according to fire department officials, NHK World reported. They also said that firemen are being called into the continuing rescue efforts at several sites.

Around 200 structures, including homes and stores, are said to have burnt down near the well-known tourist destination Asaichi Street. According to the USGS, the earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) near the Noto Peninsula in the Ishikawa prefecture around 4:10 p.m. (local time).
