Live-in Partnerships Are Serious Illnesses: BJP Lawmaker Dharambir Singh In LS

On Thursday, a Haryana-based BJP MP called live-in relationships a “dangerous disease” that should be eliminated from society and asked the government to enact legislation prohibiting them.

Dharambir Singh brought up the matter in the Lok Sabha during “zero hour,” stating that because love weddings often result in divorce, it should be required for such unions to get the approval of the bride and groom’s parents.

“I want to draw the government’s and Parliament’s attention to a very important matter. The concepts of brotherhood and Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family) are well-known in Indian culture. Compared to other social fabrics worldwide, ours is unique. Our togetherness in diversity has amazed the entire world,” the Bhiwani-Mahendragarh MP said.

Singh pointed out that arranged weddings have a long history in India and that many people still prioritize marriages planned by parents or other family members.

According to him, arranged weddings are predicated on a match of several shared elements, including societal and personal beliefs and preferences as well as family backgrounds, and this has the approval of the bride and groom.

“We believe that marriage is a holy bond that lasts for seven generations…In India, the divorce rate is only 1.1%, but in America, it is over 40%. It has been noted that planned weddings have a remarkably low divorce rate. However, Singh noted that love marriages are the primary cause of the recent sharp rise in the divorce rate.

Therefore, I propose that the approval of the bride’s and groom’s parents be required in love weddings, since many love marriages lead to problems in the villages and marriages do not always occur in the same ‘gotra’ across much of the nation. The agreement of both families is crucial since these disputes ruin many families, he added.

The term “live-in relationship” refers to a societal ill that Singh said has become a “new disease”.

According to this, a man and a woman live together without being married, the BJP MP said.

These kinds of relationships are rather popular in Western countries, but the effects of this depravity are terrible and they are quickly spreading to our culture as well. The case of Aftab (Poonawala) and Shraddha (Walkar), who were living together, came to light recently, Singh added.

He continued, alluding to the horrific Delhi case in which a guy is accused of murdering his live-in spouse and dismembering her corpse. Such instances seem to surface on an almost regular basis.

“Not only is this damaging our culture, but wickedness and hate are also becoming more prevalent in our society. There won’t be any more distinctions between ourselves and other people if this keeps on,” he said.

“I request the minister that a law be made against live-in relationships so that this dangerous disease can be eradicated from society,” Singh said.
