Mohali locals requested to deposit firearms with permits

In light of the upcoming general election, the District Electoral Officer, Aashika Jain, has instructed the citizens who possess firearm licenses to promptly surrender their firearms at neighboring police stations or arms dealers. She said that there would be no fees associated with leaving a weapon with the police, but that there would be a price of Rs 200 per month if someone chose to leave a firearm with an arms dealer.

The ADC (G) has been instructed by the DEO to make sure that the deposit fee is prominently displayed outside the stores of all weapons dealers in the district. Additionally, the display notices must be routinely inspected.

A prohibitory order, dated March 16 and based on Section 144 of the CrPC, prohibits the carrying of guns, ammunition, explosives, combustible objects, and sharp weapons throughout the district, according to the District Magistrate. She threatened to take legal action, perhaps including prosecution in accordance with relevant parts of the Indian Penal Code and other laws, against anybody who disobeyed the order. The DM also said that those in the army, police, paramilitary groups, bank guards in uniform, and bank trucks transporting cash are exempt from this directive. Members of the National Rifle Association would also be excluded, the DM stated.
