Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal victory in the world athletics championships makes India proud, says the president

Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships on Monday. President Droupadi Murmu thanked him and said his accomplishment would motivate millions of young people in the nation.

“Neeraj Chopra is a hero in India. I send him my sincere congrats. I hope he continues to do similar accomplishments so that his fame can grow,” she remarked. At the Championships in Budapest, Hungary, on Sunday, Chopra wrote the history books by taking home the gold with a huge throw of 88.17 meters in the men’s javelin final.

Neeraj Chopra becomes the first Indian to ever win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships, adding yet another illustrious chapter to the history of Indian athletics. Millions of our youngsters will be inspired by his outstanding achievement in the javelin throw finals in Budapest, the president said on microblogging site X.

With Kishore Jena (84.77m) and DP Manu (84.14m) capturing the fifth and sixth slots, respectively, three Indians finished in the top eight, marking another first. Three Indians placing in the top eight in an event at the World Championships was unprecedented.

“It is a source of tremendous national pride when three Indians, Kishore Jena, D.P. Manu, and Neeraj Chopra, participated in the final round of the javelin event at the 2023 World Athletics Championships and placed in the top six. I’m happy for all of them,” Murmu remarked.

She said that the athletes had raised the bar for Indian athletics. The President wished them “many more laurels in the future.”
