OPPN Must Create Belief That Its Objective Is To Save The Constitution, Says Brinda Karat

Brinda Karat, a senior member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said on Tuesday that the opposition parties should “give confidence” to the populace that they have united to defend the nation and Constitution from the “assault” of the BJP and RSS.

She also said, at a news conference held here, that the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Enforcement Directorate, and the Income Tax Department were the National Democratic Alliance’s true partners.

When asked if the opposition’s unity would be sufficient to defeat the BJP in the elections of 2024, considering that local politics would also be a factor, Karat responded that not only the opposition parties but also social forces and social movements from all corners of the political and social spectrum needed to come together “to prevent the destruction of the secular democratic India.”

This exercise needs to be carried out primarily at the state level because each state has a unique political structure, according to her. “At the national level, we should give confidence that we have a common goal of saving India and the Constitution of India from the assault of the BJP-RSS,” she added.

In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark that the country comes second to the opposition family, Karat said that for Modi and the BJP, “power first, principles and people second.”

She said that half of the attendees at the gathering of NDA sympathizers were defectors who “were defectors courtesy of the ED, CBI and IT department.”

Additionally, she questioned why Prime Minister Modi was’silent’ about the continuing bloodshed in Manipur.

Regarding the political climate in Maharashtra, the CPM leader said that the BJP’s hypocrisy was exposed by the fact that the individuals against whom corruption charges were made were now the party’s closest friends.

She referred to the universal Civil Code as the “uniform communal code” of the BJP’s election platform.

In conversations with community leaders and after recommending changes to personal laws, the 21st Law Commission, Karat noted that due to the government’s communal goal, these recommendations were not implemented.

The legal commission had stated that the UCC was neither desirable nor essential at this time, she noted.
