Professor at NIT Calicut was stabbed on campus by a former classmate; the motive is being investigated

Unsettlingly, associate professor Jayachandran of NIT Calicut was assaulted on campus by a former classmate, who only caused minor injuries to the teaching member. According to Onmanorama, the event happened when Vinod, a resident of Salem, Tamil Nadu, went onto the NIT campus pretending to be a student. Vinod is being held by the police, and the reason for the assault is yet unknown.

Jayachandran, a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at NIT Calicut, was taken to a private hospital shortly after the event and is now in stable condition. Vinod gained unauthorized access to the NIT campus by pretending to be a student. When they arrived at Jayachandran’s office at the Department of Civil Engineering, a furious dispute broke out. Using a penknife from the professor’s desk, Vinod stabbed him in the stomach and neck out of a fit of fury. Security personnel responded immediately to subdue the perpetrator, saving Jayachandran.

Given that Vinod made contradictory remarks while being questioned by police, authorities are still having difficulty figuring out the motivation for his assault. Vinod first claimed to be a former NIT student, but he then claimed to be a classmate of Prof. Jayachandran, pursuing a PhD at IIT Madras under the same mentor. Vinod claims—an allegation that has not yet been confirmed—that Jayachandran’s withholding of some of his medical certifications was the impetus for the attack, according to an officer that Onmanorama reported.

According to police sources, Vinod said that he and Jayachandran finished the course together, but that they then went in separate directions. While Jayachandran was hired by NIT, Vinod was able to find a job as an assistant professor at a private engineering college in Andhra Pradesh. The situation becomes more complicated when Vinod describes how Jayachandran gave him money while he was having a heart crisis and claims that the professor was holding important papers for his institution. Driven by rage, Vinod stabbed Jayachandran when he refused to give over these papers. The layers of this puzzling tragedy are still being uncovered by the police inquiry.
