protests against poplar tree cutting at Srinagar College, and former students demand an investigation

Amar Singh College alumni and members of the civic society today voiced their grave worry about the recent moves to chop down trees on the college grounds. They demanded a thorough investigation of the occurrence.

The alumni said that the World Arbor Day decision lacked environmental concern in a letter to the institution. They said that the trees were chopped down without authorization from the DFO, Social Forestry, Srinagar, and demanded discussion to protect the college’s legacy.

The letter said, “We are writing to you today with a deep sense of concern and urgency regarding the recent decision to cut down historical poplar trees at the college. We are Amar Singh College alumni and members of civil society.”

It continued, “As a treasured component of our cultural legacy, these trees symbolize not only the historic college’s natural beauty but also the collective history of thousands of students who have passed through its doors.”

We have seen with the greatest sorrow that these living monuments are being irreparably damaged. The letter went on, “Every tree has hundreds of tales inside its arms and was an integral part of the college’s spirit.

The decision to remove these historic trees without conducting sufficient public discussions or taking into account other options, according to the letter, is not only a betrayal of our shared duty to conserve and safeguard the environment, but also a disrespect to our cultural legacy.

The alumni have requested that a high-level investigation be conducted to see if the course of action was well thought out and whether other options were taken into consideration.
