Punjab CM Charges LG With Resisting People’s Will And Obstructing Sikh Gurdwara Bill

Governor Banwarilal Purohit was criticized by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday for refusing to sign the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and accused of suppressing the democratic will of the state’s citizens.

The Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was approved by the Punjab Assembly on June 20 in order to guarantee free transmission of “Gurbani” from the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

The news comes a day after the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee announced plans to broadcast Gurbani from the Golden Temple on a satellite station and its own YouTube channel.

Mann said on Twitter on Saturday that the Gurbani program will never once again be given to “special people” working for the Badal family’s business.

On Saturday, he also sent Purohit a letter that said, “It is regrettable that the Bill has not yet been signed. This essentially amounts to suppressing Punjab’s democratic will.

Mann said that “one particular Channel owned by a political family has monopolised the telecast of ‘Sarab Sanjhi Gurbani’ from Sri Harmandir Sahib and has been making profits from it.” Mann also mentioned PTC Channel, which was often associated with the Badal family.

Before the agreement between the SGPC and the private channel ends on July 23, Mann pleaded with Purohit to sign the legislation.

Millions of devotees throughout the globe may be prevented from seeing the live broadcast of Holy Gurbani from Sri Harmandir Sahib if you don’t sign the bill right now. Their religious sensibilities would be severely wounded by this, he said.
