Rampur Conflict Regarding Ambedkar Hoarding: Deputy District Magistrate, Three Policemen Removed

In a startling turn of events, three police officers and a deputy district magistrate in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, were fired in relation to the untimely death of a Dalit kid following a dispute over the placement of a billboard that featured Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar.

Context of the Event
On Tuesday, February 28, two groups got into an altercation over the placement of a hoarding featuring Ambedkar’s photo in Rampur’s Milak neighborhood. A section opposed the installation of the hoarding and the construction of a monument of Ambedkar on the site, arguing that the land belonged to the gram samaj.

Conflict’s escalation
Local Tehsil employees and a police squad arrived at the site to clear the unlawful encroachment as emotions mounted. Amidst the mayhem, a seventeen-year-old student called Sumesh Kumar was on his way home after his Class 10 test when he was fatally shot during the altercation. The incident also harmed two more people.

Taken Official Action
Following the event, Aman Deval, the deputy district magistrate for Milak Tehsil, was immediately dismissed from his office by Rampur District Magistrate Joginder Singh. Inspector Anupam Sharma, the in-charge of Milak Police Station, Inspector Surendra, the outpost’s inspector, and responsible Circle Officer Kirti Nidhi Anand were also removed by Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi.

Visit by Bhim Army Chief and Requirements
On Wednesday, March 1, Bhim Army leader Chandrashekhar Azad paid a visit to the area to see the boy’s grieving family. Azad expressed his fury at the tragedy, harshly denounced the BJP government in power, and asked that the victim’s family get Rs 50 lakh in compensation. He also demanded that a family member be given a job.

When tackling social and political concerns, there is a need for more empathy and understanding, as shown by the unfortunate occurrence in Rampur. The government’s determination to guarantee justice and responsibility is shown by the dismissal of the officials implicated in the event.
