Sonia Gandhi will preside over today’s Lok Sabha discussion by the Congress on the Women’s Reservation Bill

Today in the Lok Sabha, the Women’s Reservation Bill, which was introduced to Parliament on Tuesday, will be discussed. Sonia Gandhi, the chair of the Congress Parliamentary Party, will preside over the discussion for her party in the lower house. During UPA 1, the Congress party initially sponsored the Women’s Reservation Bill.

The measure was introduced in the Rajya Sabha in 2008, and in 2010 it passed the upper chamber hurdle. However, the Women’s Reservation Bill was unable to be enacted by the Lok Sabha and subsequently expired as a result of resistance from numerous parties on the SC/ST and OBC reservations included within it.

However, in order to pass the historic Women’s Reservation Bill, which aims to reserve 33% of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, the Narendra Modi administration summoned a special session of Parliament. It was introduced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and given the name Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam by the Modi administration.

The measure would further enhance Indian democracy, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who encouraged all parties to support its unanimous passage.

“The Narishakti Vandan Adhiniyam will bolster our democracy even further. I extend my congratulations to the nation’s mothers, sisters, and daughters for Narishakti Vandan Adhiniyam. We are determined to turning this measure into law, PM Modi assured the nation’s mothers, sisters, and daughters.

The Congress party has committed to support the Women’s Reservation Bill, branding it a creation of the “grand-old-party.” However, because to the absence of OBC participation, it referred to the Narishakti Vandan Adhiniyam as a “election jumla”. A study claims that the measure won’t likely go into force until 2027.

Only after redistricting seats through a delimitation process can women get the 33% quota in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures. But it won’t happen until after the subsequent census in 2027.
