Tears and cheers as NEET returns on the Tamil Nadu election schedule

Since its introduction in 2017, the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) has been a contentious political issue in Tamil Nadu, particularly during election seasons. This time is no exception, as the problem is mentioned in the platforms of every significant political party. While the issue is becoming more well known, academics are concerned that it might give pupils false optimism.

In its platform, the DMK pledged to get Tamil Nadu an exemption from the NEET. In order to provide all students with an equal opportunity, the AIADMK said that it will push the national government to implement a new method of admission to medical colleges based on Class 12 grades.

In the meanwhile, the CPM has said that it would insist on the union government approving the TN government’s bill that requests an exemption from NEET. In its platform, the Congress party has also said that, should it win power, it plans to allow states to opt out of centrally administered qualifying exams like the Common University Entrance Test and NEET.

Nonetheless, some educators accuse the parties of deceiving pupils with NEET politics. Career counselor Jayprakash Gandhi said that he counsels pupils not to follow the promises made by the election. “Students should not stop preparing for the test until and unless the state or federal government announces anything concrete about it,” he said.

Students, however, have differing opinions on the matter. Some people are concerned about the parties’ future, while others are aware of their objective.

The state was supposed to be excluded from the test prior to the 2021 assembly election, but nothing materialized. Thus, I’m not taking the promises seriously this time,” said J Akhil, who will soon make his third appearance on the NEET this year. K Prasad worries about the money he has already spent on being admission to the center. Prasad takes NEET coaching programs at Madipakkam.

Chennai: The State Platform for Common School System – Tamil Nadu (SPCSS-TN) has published a statement encouraging the public to support the alliance, citing the parties’ promises to uphold equality in educational institutions and enhance government schools. It also listed the drawbacks of the National Education Policy and the BJP government’s “undemocratic” tactics for dissuading farmers from demonstrating.
