Violence in Manipur: CM Biren Singh to Meet the Governor Despite Rumours of His Resignation

N Biren Singh, the chief minister of Manipur, is due to meet with governor Anusuiya Uikey at 3 p.m. on Friday despite widespread rumours that he may quit today.

The Manipur state in northeast India is experiencing widespread violence and ethnic strife during the time of the development.

According to reports in the media, CM Biren Singh would reportedly tender his resignation to the governor today after being informed that the Centre would assume over unless he resigned.

In a letter to PM Modi earlier, nine Manipur-based BJP lawmakers said that the state’s residents no longer had any trust in the N Biren Singh-led administration.

Women allegedly gathered outside the Manipur Chief Minister’s house and Raj Bhavan after hearing about Singh’s resignation to implore him not to step down.

They requested that the CM take a “firm stand against the troublemakers” in its place, according to news agency PTI.

On Thursday, three more individuals were killed in an exchange of fire between security personnel and suspected rioters in Manipur amid the growing ethnic tensions.

Manipur has ethnic conflict
The fierce interethnic fighting between the Meitei and Kuki groups has claimed over 100 lives to far and has lasted for over two months.

Following the planning of a “Tribal Solidarity March” in the hill areas on May 3, violence first broke out.

The Meitei community had requested Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation, but the tribal Kuki tribe had fiercely opposed this. The march was in reaction to this.
