At the Asian Para Games, Odia chess player Soundarya Kumar Pradhan won individual silver and group gold

At the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, Odisha’s Soundarya Kumar Pradhan took home gold and silver medals in the chess tournament.

Silver was Soundarya’s reward for winning the men’s solo quick VI-B1 chess competition. Two more Indian medals were awarded to Satish Inani Darpan (who won gold) and Ashwinbhai Kanchanbhai Makwana (who won bronze). In the team event, the threesome also won the gold medal.

Notably, Indian para-athletes made history on Saturday by taking home an astounding 111 medals at the conclusion of the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, which is the highest medal total for the nation in any significant international multi-sport competition.

In the Hangzhou Asian Games, which took place from September 23 to October 8, Indian para-athletes won four more medals than the able-bodied participants did, with 29 gold, 31 silver, and 51 bronze.

After China (521 medals: 214 gold, 167 silver, 140 bronze), Iran (44 gold, 46 silver, 41 bronze), Japan (42, 49, 59), and Korea (30, 33, 40), India placed fifth in the medal count, which is a noteworthy accomplishment in and of itself.
