ENG vs. IND, First Test (5th Test): R Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav Start a Riot as England is dismissed for 218 runs

Day 1 of the third session saw India’s spinner Kuldeep Yadav take five wickets, including Zak Crawley for 79, to dismiss England for 218 in the fifth and final Test on Thursday. In his 100th Test match, Ravichandran Ashwin claimed four wickets.

In their attempt to salvage a victory at the magnificent Dharamsala stadium, which is overlooked by snow-capped Himalayan mountains, the visitors chose to bat and eventually fell from 175-3.

After losing five wickets for eight runs in seven overs, England was taken to lunch at 194/8 by wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes (on eight) and Shoaib Bashir (on five). However, India managed to seize the two remaining wickets early in the third session.

As he passed 50 Test wickets, Yadav’s left-arm wrist spin was particularly noticeable.

After surviving a few reprieves, Crawley reached his fourth half-century of the series in the first session. Yadav then bowled him with a ball that turned in sharply and struck the stumps.

In his historic 100th Test match, Jonny Bairstow joined Joe Root at the crease and looked strong after hitting Yadav for two sixes.

After a fruitless England review, Bairstow reached over 6,000 Test runs when Yadav caught him behind off a googly that took the edge into the wicketkeeper’s hands.

After trapping Root LBW for 26, Ravindra Jadeja struck four balls later in the following over, and the former captain ruined another review.

After captain Ben Stokes was ruled out leg before wicket by Yadav, with the assurance that the ball would strike leg stump, earning him his fifth wicket, England lost their final review.

Tom Hartley was sent back by off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who subsequently had Mark Wood catch two balls.

The openers had taken some time to get going in the first session, but Crawley quickly found his rhythm, hitting 11 fours and a six. Along with Ben Duckett, who scored 27, he put up 64 runs.

In his first over, Shubman Gill ran backwards to grab a diving catch off Yadav, giving Duckett’s slog a leading edge.

At the stroke of lunchtime, Ollie Pope was bowled out for eleven by the same bowler.

India, captained by Rohit Sharma, dropped the first Test but rallied to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the series of five matches.
