Mohun Bagan Super Giants defeat Odisha FC in the ISL 2024 Semi-Final to go to their second consecutive Final

Kolkata, April 28: In the second leg of the first semi-final at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Sunday, April 28, Mohun Bagan Super Giants beat Odisha FC by a score of 2-0 to become the first Indian Super League (ISL) 2023–24 season finalist.

The Mariners defeated the Juggernauts 3-2 on aggregate thanks to a polished and clinical performance, and they advanced to the competition’s championship match for the second consecutive season.

Since Mohun Bagan Super Giant finished first in the league rounds, they will now play in the ISL final 2024 on May 4 at Salt Lake Stadium, their home field. They will be waiting for the victor of the other semifinal match between FC Goa and Mumbai City FC.

The team led by Antonio Lopez Habas entered this game having suffered a 2-1 setback against Odisha FC in the first leg of their round-of-16 contest in Bhubaneswar.

But the Mariners overcame that outcome in a match that they controlled from start to finish, giving Odisha FC nothing at the Mariners’ stronghold in the City of Joy.

Jason Cummings gave Habas’ team the lead in the 22nd minute, and Sahal Abdul Samad put the game away in the second half’s additional time to complete an impressive win.

There’s no denying that the Mariners have a roster full of stars at their disposal. But in the previous several months, their Spanish tactician has done a commendable job of inspiring them and bringing them together as a cohesive team; the fruits of that labor are evident here.

With all of their great talents performing at the highest level recently, Mohun Bagan Super Giants are advancing towards the ISL Cup with similar zeal after their victory in the ISL 2023–24.

Dimitrios Petratos, Cummings’ striking rival, set the foundation for Cummings’ goal. Petratos hasn’t stopped creating amazing moments this year.

Odisha FC keeper and former Mariner Amrinder Singh fumbled his long-range shot. Cummings won the first wicket of the match as he sprang on the ball and netted it home like a fox in the box.

Roy Krishna attempted to start a solo attempt inside the Mohun Bagan Super Giant box three minutes later. He displayed rapid footwork in confined places inside the 12-yard area. But a well-coordinated defense made sure such attempts were thwarted.

After then, the home team had many opportunities, but they were unable to take advantage of them and secure the win due to a lack of resolve up front.

Attacking midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad, who has had a difficult season so far due to injuries, brought that moment late in the game.

Sahal attempted to touch in Manvir Singh’s forceful low cross as the former Kerala Blasters FC midfielder cut into the inside of the left wing.

Amrinder stopped that attempt, but Sahal’s head caught the deflection, and he somehow scraped it into the back of the goal to lead the club to the championship game.
