Nadal travels far to make it to the last 16 of the Madrid Open

At the Madrid Open on Monday, Rafael Nadal defeated Pedro Cachin after a three-hour fight, winning 6-1 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 to go to the round of 16.

The former world number one dominated the first set, reverting to his best form, but Cachin gave him a serious push in the second.

In the third set, the Spaniard recovered and reduced his mistakes to take the lead and make it to the fourth round of a tour-level tournament for the first time since 2022.

After defeating Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro in two sets, Rafael Nadal, ranked thirty, is only one win away from securing his spot in his tenth straight quarterfinal in Madrid. On Tuesday, he will take on Jiri Lehecka in the next round.

After 602 days, Rafael Nadal has won three straight ATP matches. At the US Open in 2022, he last done this.

Nadal’s clay-court record against players outside the Top 50 in the ATP Rankings increased to 162-1 since 2005 with his win against World No. 91 Cachin.
