R Ashwin is ridiculed by Virender Sehwag, who claims that he “won’t find a place in my team”

Concerns have been expressed by former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag over the performance of experienced spin bowling all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin in the current Indian Premier League (IPL). In the IPL 2024, Ashwin has had difficulty taking wickets; in eight games, he has claimed only two scalps. In addition, he has allowed more than nine runs per over. Ashwin has said that collecting wickets in Twenty20 cricket matches is meaningless, notwithstanding his troubles. Sehwag responded angrily to Ashwin’s statement, claiming that the veteran may not be sold at auction the next season.

This is comparable to K.L. Rahul’s statement that the strike rate is irrelevant. The same. He said that it doesn’t matter whether you get the wickets while bowling, and Ashwin has made the same statement about batting. He could not even be selected in the auction the next year if his numbers are poor. Do you anticipate a bowler you choose to let up 25–30 runs, or do you want him to take wickets and win you two or three times as man of the match?” said Sehwag on Cricbuzz.

Sehwag attacked Ashwin’s mentality and drew attention to the way that his colleagues, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, have been selecting at regular intervals.

“Everyone who bowls against him, whether it Kuldeep Yadav, Chahal, or anyone else, is taking wickets. He believes that anybody can strike him if he bowls off spin. He doesn’t get any wickets because of this, which is why he bowls his carrom bowl. Perhaps if he had greater faith in his doosra or off-spin, he could take more wickets. But that’s how he thinks. However, I wouldn’t think that way if I were a franchise coach or mentor. “My bowler will not find a place in the team if his mindset is to save runs rather than take wickets,” he said.

With 16 points from nine games, Ashwin’s team, RR, leads the IPL 2024 points standings despite his dismal play.

To make it to the playoffs, RR must defeat SunRisers Hyderabad in their next game.
