At the IPL 2024 auction, Mitchell Starc, the bowler from Australia, was purchased by the Gambhir-led KKR for a whopping Rs 24.75 crore, making him the most expensive player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) ever.

After teammate Pat Cummins was acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 20.5 crore on the same day at the auction held in Dubai on December 19, the left-arm fast bowler became the second player to cross the 20-crore barrier.

Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians placed bids for the 33-year-old Starc, who entered the auction with a base price of Rs 2 crore. There was a fierce bidding battle going on between both sides. Before the Kolkata-based team was able to get him for a record fee, KKR and Gujarat Titans entered the picture and raised the price by over Rs 20 crore.

Starc, the best bowler in Australia, is back in the IPL after an eight-year absence.

The seasoned Australian bowler has skipped the IPL since 2015 to concentrate on performing national obligations. In 2018, Starc made his last appearance in the IPL auction, when KKR paid Rs 9.4 crore to acquire his services. Unfortunately, he missed the whole season due to a fracture in his right tibial bone.

Starc played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore for two of his IPL seasons. He demonstrated his bowling ability in the 2014 edition, taking 14 wickets at an average of 28.71 in 14 matches. Starc improved upon his previous year’s efforts, taking 20 wickets at an exceptional average of only 14.55 in 13 matches. Notably, in the 2015 season, he recorded his best result of 4/15.

Even though they used almost half of their purse money on Starc, KKR still had nine more players in the bag at the conclusion of the auction. Nonetheless, the two-time winners struck one of the greatest deals when they acquired young England pacer Gus Atkinson.
