Shubman Gill plans to improve his batting skills on slower pitches during the Asia Cup in 2023

Colombo: Legendary Indian batsman Shubman Gill has made it quite clear that Team India is entirely dedicated to improving their ability on slow surfaces. India lost to Bangladesh by only six runs in a nail-biting match during the last Super 4 match of the Asia Cup. The Indians came agonizingly close to winning despite the brilliant century by Gill, who made his sixth ODI century. The versatile all-rounder Axar Patel, who hit a quick 34-ball 42 but was unable to remain at the bat to secure the victory, had the next-highest contribution.

The 24-year-old Indian opener stressed the importance of perfecting their batting on slow, dangerous wickets following this thrilling match. The stakes have never been greater as the ODI World Cup approaches and the Asia Cup final against the tough hosts, Sri Lanka, is set for Sunday.

During the post-game news conference, Gill said, “Unquestionably, this is an area we are actively working to improve.” He said, “We had an extensive training camp in Bangalore before to this event, where we developed our talents on surfaces similar to what we’ve faced here. We expect slower wickets as the World Cup goes on, so it’s critical to adjust.

Gill further said that by improving their capacity to rotate the strike effectively, the Indian hitting squad is assiduously attempting to lower the number of dot balls.

When asked about India’s strategy for dealing with Bangladesh’s fearsome spinners, Gill clarified that they intended to play the ball late. The trio of Bangladeshi spinners—including the valued Gill—captured four crucial Indian wickets under the leadership of the unstoppable Shakib Al Hasan, Mahedi Hasan, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

When considering his own performance, Gill was very honest and stated that he should have led the squad to victory and across the finish line. However, he emphasized how important the 266-run pursuit was as a teaching tool.

Gill minimized any worries over all-rounder Axar Patel’s injury although acknowledging that Patel suffered some painful hits to his right hand while batting.

The cricketing world is anxiously awaiting to see Team India’s improved batting skills on the difficult, slower surfaces as the Asia Cup 2023 develops.
