The Budapest Showpiece will feature three Indian javelin throwers in the 2023 World Athletics Championships

Four Indian men’s javelin throwers, a rarity in Indian athletics, have qualified for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, later this month, however due to an injury to one of the group, all of them will not compete in the high-profile competition.

Because he won the Diamond League, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena both met the requirements to participate in the August 19–27 showcase under the wild card rule.

Along with them, Rohit Yadav and DP Manu qualified for the world championships as javelin throwers. But Rohit will not compete in the World Championships due to recent surgery on his throwing elbow.

Following the completion of the qualifying session on July 30th, World Athletics (WA) revised its Road to Budapest list on Wednesday. Jena, who achieved a personal best of 84.38m on July 30 to win gold at the Sri Lankan National Championships, placed 36th.

Each event allows for a maximum of three athletes from a single nation, but if one qualifies through wild card, the total may rise to four. In the instance of India, Chopra qualified as a wild card, allowing the nation to field another three javelin throwers should they do so as well.

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI), however, is in charge of selecting the Indian squad and may choose not to send a certain individual to participate in an event. Both breaking admission requirements and meeting quotas based on global rankings qualify, and WA has set aside certain numbers for each head.

Three Indians, Akshdeep Singh, Vikash Singh, and Paramjeet Bisht, also made the cut for the men’s 20-kilometer race walk.

Priyanka Goswami beat the entry criterion to qualify for the women’s 20-kilometer race walk, while Bhawna Jat made the cut based on global rankings.

Three Indians have qualified for the men’s triple jump: Praveen Chithravel, Abdulla Aboobacker, and Eldhose Paul.

While Aboobacker and Paul met the requirements based on their positions in the global rankings, Chithravel violated the entrance threshold.

Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar and renowned 3000m steeplechaser Avinash Sable, two recent Diamond League medalists from India, have already qualified via the entrance criteria.

By violating entrance requirements, Jeswin Aldrin has also qualified for the men’s long jump. Tajinderpal Toor, the shot putter who holds the Asian record, also met the entrance requirement.

Asian champions Jyothi Yarraji and Parul Chaudhary have qualified for the women’s 100-meter hurdle and 3000-meter steeplechase events, respectively. The global ranking quota also included long jumper Shali Singh and javelin thrower Annu Rani.

Santhosh Kumar (men’s 400m hurdles), K M Chanda (women’s 800m), Kishan Kumar (800m), Ajay Kaur Saroj (1500m), Sarvesh Anil Kushare, and Tejaswin Shankar (high jump), Ram Baboo (men’s 35km race walk), and Kishan Kumar (women’s 800m) all qualified in the global ranking quota.

Only the men’s 4x400m team advanced in the relay competitions.
