Why Jasprit Bumrah Can’t Lead India in All Formats, according to an ex-IND batter

Abhishek Nayar, a former Indian batsman, has advised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) against making Jasprit Bumrah the captain in all forms, stressing the need to avoid overloading the star bowler. After former India wicketkeeper Kiran More remarked that Bumrah would be a terrific captain across all three forms, Nayar made his remarks.

On Friday, Bumrah made his T20I leadership debut by guiding India to a 2-run victory against Ireland in the first game of the series. India used the DLS technique to win the game because of the weather, and they now have a 1-0 series lead.

Both Nayar and More praised Bumrah for his leadership skills, but the former warned India against handing Jasprit full-time captaincy since it would have a negative effect on the pacer’s health.

Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant are three players that the current captain of India, Rohit Sharma, has said are being prepared to be future leaders. The fast bowler captained India in the fifth Test against England that was postponed last year, but Nayar used Pat Cummins as an example of why it’s crucial to maintain Jasprit healthy for the key competitions. Jasprit Bumrah the cricketer, in his opinion, is more significant for India than Bumrah the skipper.

“He needs to be made the captain. He is a sharp game thinker. He has the ability to lead the team in Test cricket in the future. Fast bowlers are excellent leaders, in my opinion, More remarked after India’s victory against Ireland in Dublin.

Nayar claimed that this wasn’t the case, citing Bumrah’s previous history of ailments and the fact that he almost didn’t make the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 because of back problems.

Depending on his physical condition. Pat Cummins demonstrated how a quick bowler can be the captain during the Ashes. It may be a little tiring, in my opinion, to bowl, play in all forms, and then take the helm, which is why batters often do so, according to Nayar.

“You cannot risk injuring Jasprit Bumrah while carrying out that. This makes sense for T20Is. It makes sense for lengthier formats, but I would just advise “saving him and keeping him for important tournaments” and making sure we don’t overwork and misuse him. Let him take pleasure in his performance since being the captain prevents you from doing so, said Nayar.

The top bowler, who last played for India in September of last year, has just recently reached peak condition. Bumrah will likely be kept in the dark till the ODI World Cup later this year since he missed the T20 World Cup last year and the IPL 2023.
