For a rat infestation, IRCTC fines the contractor for the LTT Madgaon Express pantry cars Rs 25,000

After a video showing rats infesting the pantry car went viral, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) fined the contractor for the LTT Madgaon Express’ pantry car Rs 25,000. The footage raised questions regarding the quality and sanitation of the food served on Indian Railways trains. According to a report by Free Press Journal, a senior IRCTC official acknowledged the punishment and said that the contractor had been cautioned and given instructions to make sure that such instances would not occur again.

Two rats are seen in the video, which was taken on October 15, 2023, nibbling on food that is stored in pans that are left uncovered in the pantry vehicle. The video received negative feedback from internet users and was extensively circulated on social media.

According to a top IR official, rodent control measures have been implemented, including the deployment of poisons and rat traps. The IRCTC also announced on social media that it had responded to the situation appropriately. According to the report, the pantry car personnel has been instructed to maintain cleanliness and hygiene, and those in charge have been given advice on how to take efficient steps to prevent insect and rat infestations.
