Here’s Why Fans Root for 81-year-old Martin Scorsese—Billie Eilish, at 22, Wins Two Oscars

The emotional ballad “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish won the coveted Best Original Ballad award, guaranteeing that “Barbie” wouldn’t walk away from the evening empty-handed. With songs from top-tier musicians, the soundtrack of Greta Gerwig’s smash hit became not simply a phenomenon but also a powerhouse in and of itself.

“What Was I Made For?” was co-written by Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell, and it was a strong favorite for the Oscars after winning Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards. After winning the Oscar for Original Song with “No Time to Die” from the 2021 James Bond blockbuster, this is the dynamic duo’s second Oscar triumph.

As the youngest two-time Oscar winner in history, Eilish is just 22 years old. Her accomplishment is commendable, and it may also be down to a little bit of luck—something 81-year-old Martin Scorsese is all too familiar with.

It seems that the award is a little pointless given the roster of renowned directors—including Kubrick, Hitchcock, Godard, Welles, and others—who never managed to win the coveted Directing Oscar. Martin Scorsese, however, freely admits that he still wants more Oscar gold, despite his unparalleled contributions to the film industry. Although his one win for “The Departed” is evidence of his skill, his renowned editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, maintains he has been passed over at least seven times. This discrepancy is noticeable, to say the least, as he has had 11 nominations, while his latest work has received many nominations without any victories.

“Billie Eilish wins two Oscars, Martin Scorsese wins one,” as a “X” user appropriately said. That is the Hollywood Academy.

There are several classics in Scorsese’s repertoire, some of which may even surpass “The Departed.” His masterpiece “Raging Bull” was beaten out by “Ordinary People,” which is always confusing. In a similar vein, Kevin Costner’s “Dances With Wolves” overshadowed “Goodfellas,” and “Taxi Driver”‘s obvious absence continues.

Furthermore, even with its imperfections, Scorsese’s directing in “Killers of the Flower Moon” was a masterwork of cinematography. Although Scorsese faced fierce competition, especially from Christopher Nolan, his talent was evident, but the Oscar remained unattainable. Although many others online share the same attitude, the Academy’s past performance implies that Scorsese’s accomplishments may yet go unappreciated. Nevertheless, some wish him luckier with his next endeavor.

Nevertheless, it was impossible to avoid thinking about Scorsese’s disappointing experience with the Academy as the younger Eilish politely took her Oscar, expressing thanks for the song and the influence of the film. Though sometimes obscured by the glitz and glamor of award season, his career is a monument to the pinnacle of cinematic achievement.

Even so, while the internet rejoiced over Eilish’s victory, it was still sad to realize that Scorsese’s time still awaited. And while Eilish respectfully recognized the people the film had an impact on, one could only wonder when the Academy will finally appreciate the brilliance of a giant of cinema like Scorsese.
