From a little child who once sold phenyl door-to-door to the spice king of the UAE: Meet Dr. Dhananjay Datar of Adil Group

The tale of Dhananjay Datar is one of tenacity overcoming all obstacles. His father left him a little grocery store, which he effectively turned into a thriving enterprise. The Adil group consists of two spice factories, two flour mills with state-of-the-art equipment, fifty roomy superstores located across the Gulf Countries, and an import-export business.

With over 9000 types of real Indian dishes, including spices, pickles, and other delicacies, accessible at their superstores, it has become a cult favorite among Indian expats.

modest beginnings

born into a middle-class Vidarbha-based Maharashtrian family. He learned self-reliance, thrift, and hard labor from life’s lessons, and this gave him an unbreakable will to overcome any obstacles and succeed in the end.

In 1984, Dhananjay traveled to Dubai at the age of twenty-one to assist his father in opening a modest Indian spice store in Bur Dubai. Following a period of service with Air India, the late Mahadeo Datar traveled to Dubai in 1975 and lived there for ten years, working as a grocery store owner in Jebel Ali.

The Indian expat community quickly came to trust the Datars once they overcame their early difficulties. Their ability to read consumer needs and provide the appropriate items at the right times to become a household brand among Indians and other nationalities in the UAE was the key to their success. “Determination-Honesty-Customer Service-Courtesy has always been my mantra,” Dhananjay says, and it was this dedication that made the modest shopkeeper in Dubai become a millionaire.

The company transformed from a family-run enterprise to a specialized grocery chain, spreading its reach across the GCC. The firm established a production facility in Dubai’s Al Quoz industrial district, where it makes Indian cuisine products sold under the Peacock brand. Additionally, it has an Indian branch called Masala King Exports in Mumbai, India. This company is among the top exporters of high-quality Indian non-food and grocery items across the Indian subcontinent.

Dhananjay is delighted to state that Vandana brought financial discipline and management to the company, while Hrishikesh and Rohit introduced the newest technology, such as online marketing, e-commerce, and artificial intelligence.

The Adil Group is actively growing its outlets in the other Gulf nations. In the United States, Canada, Kenya, Switzerland, Italy, Eritrea, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, it has set up specific trade channels.

Dhananjay has won several accolades for quality and competence both domestically and internationally. He has received recognition for his charitable endeavors as well. He has given liberally to social welfare organizations, schools for disadvantaged kids, and orphanages. For his services to social entrepreneurship, Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Smruti Prathishthan, Mumbai, bestowed upon him a unique honor.

If there was ever a tale of rags to riches, Dr. Dhananjay Datar’s is the one. He had so little money that he could not even get a bicycle and all he could hope for was a square supper. He gets to go around in a custom Rolls-Royce these days!
