Mining brought in Rs50,000 crore to Odisha in FY2021–2022: Chief Secy

According to Odisha Chief Secretary PK Jena on Wednesday, the state’s earnings from the mining industry for the fiscal year 2021–2022 was Rs 50,000 crore.

Speaking at the National Metallurgist Award ceremony and the 77th annual technical meeting of the Indian Institute of Metals, Jena said that the mining industry has transformed the state’s financial status, with industrial revenue rising tenfold from just Rs 4,900 crore in the 2016–17 fiscal year.

In 2016–17, the mining industry brought in almost Rs 4,900 crore. It increased to over Rs 50,000 crore in 2021–2022. This is almost a ten-fold growth in only five years, Jena added, stressing the mining industry’s economic significance to the state.

He stated that Odisha is dedicated to promoting the industry and acknowledges the value of metals and metallurgical infrastructure.

He addressed the assembly, saying, “We are here to support you, be it the development of new technology or collaboration with research and scientific institutions.”

According to the chief secretary, the state acknowledges that the metal business must change in order to continue being viable.

He said that there should be as little negative influence on the environment as possible from green metal, sustainable mining methods, effective procedures, and trash recycling.

The sector requires “metamorphosis,” according to Satish Pai, president of IIM and MD of Hindalco. This year’s conference topic, “Sustainable transformations in metal industries,” is a clear call to action to help the metal industry function in an ecologically conscious way.

The three-day event started on Wednesday and will include almost 700 scientific paper presentations in addition to 60 eminent national and international speakers who will talk at various sessions. The conference is being attended by approximately 1,300 people, including top government officials, PSUs, members of the metal industries, well-known business houses, and research institutes from across the world.

Chief guest at the awards event was Union Minister of State for Steel and Rural Development Faggan Singh Kulaste, who also spoke during the award session as the Ministry of Steel Secretary Nagendra Nath Sinha.

Experts in the area of metallurgy received honors in five categories: lifetime accomplishment, national metallurgist, award for R&D in the iron and steel industry, young metallurgist in metal science, and young metallurgist in environmental science.

The dignitaries will be addressed on Thursday by Ajit Kumar Mohanty, the secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy and chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.
