20 Missing and 11 Dead After Cyclone Hits Southern Brazil

Authorities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil report that at least 11 people have died as a result of an extratropical storm that hit the area on Friday.

In a news statement, the government of Rio Grande do Sul said that 20 more people had gone missing as a result of the storm’s severe rains and that helicopter searches are now being conducted in flooded communities.

The town of Caraa, which has a population of about 8,000, was one of the hardest affected along the path of the hurricane.

“The state of affairs in Caraa strongly concerns us. The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, visited the region and stated, “It is crucial that we can rapidly map the key damaged areas and identify the individuals who need care.

Maquine, a municipality on the east coast, has gotten around a foot of rain as of Friday night, according to officials.

Many locals in the afflicted regions have sought refuge in their towns’ outdoor sports facilities. In numerous locations, there is a danger of landslides, according to the authorities.

According to Leite, officials have performed 2,400 rescues in the last two days.

Our primary goal at this time is to safeguard and preserve lives of people. We are finding missing individuals, saving stranded people, and helping families in any way we can, the man stated.

Brazil often experiences fatal floods, which has wreaked havoc for decades.
