After the affirmative action verdict, NBA legend Charles Barkley decides to alter his mind about promoting diversity at Auburn

The NBA icon and Auburn University alumni Charles Barkley has taken a risky action in reaction to the Supreme Court’s recent decision on college admissions standards. Barkley has made the decision to leave a sizable $5 million bequest to Auburn University in his will, all of which will go towards scholarships for Black students. Barkley made this choice as a means of assuring Auburn’s diversity in light of the court’s finding.

Barkley spoke of his passion for Auburn and said that his original intention was for the contribution to benefit children from underprivileged homes. He had second thoughts, however, after the most recent decision. After repeated calls and chats with his friends, Barkley came to see how critical it was to guarantee a spot for Black students at Auburn. He thinks that making this gift will help to secure equal chances and foster diversity.

According to statistics from Auburn University, the percentage of Black students enrolled decreased slightly from 5.3 percent in 2020 to 4.91 percent in the autumn of 2022. It is Barkley’s intention to remedy this decrease and promote better representation by concentrating his commitment on scholarships for Black students.

In an earlier draught of his will, Barkley had thought about making a larger donation. To encourage Black kids in particular, he made this significant step after the recent Supreme Court judgement, which marked a turning point for him.
