Sunak signals a vote later in the year but rules out the May 2 UK election

On May 2, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak signaled that a public vote would instead take place later this year, ruling out a general election.

“We have elections on May 2 for mayors, police and crime commissioners, and municipal problems in a few weeks. In an interview with ITV on Thursday night, Sunak said that there would not be a general election on that day.
His words put an end to weeks of conjecture in Westminster over the premier’s potential pursuit of an early general election.

Sunak has said on several occasions that he conducted elections in the “second half” of 2024, according to his “working assumption.” Despite mounting political pressure on his stance and his prior inability to categorically rule out a May vote, there has been conjecture that he might decide to go to the polls early.
The election may be called in the fall, according to Sunak’s allies, as as as Bloomberg earlier reported. Opinion surveys show that the Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, leads the ruling Conservative Party by around 20 points.
