The government of Sri Lanka is reportedly in contact with IIT Madras on the ambitious project.

“The future roadmap was recently discussed during a high-level delegation’s visit to the Chennai campus. The Kandy campus is probably going to come up in the negotiations, according to a source.

The source said, “The delegation also visited the campus’s Research Park and spoke with officials about potential areas of engagement.”

Meritorious Sri Lankan students will have access to admission possibilities to India’s IITs beginning with the 2017–18 academic year, according to an announcement made by the Indian government.

“IIT Madras is in the first stages of talks with Sri Lankan authorities to establish a campus there. A group from IIT Madras will soon go to Sri Lanka for a feasibility study, according to an IIT Madras official. A delegation from Sri Lanka recently visited our campus.

The Sri Lanka campus would be the second overseas campus of IIT Madras if the plans for it materialize.

The establishment of an offshore campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, was announced by the school last year. Preeti Aghalyam, the first female IIT director, was named director-in-charge.

The last legal formality before the campus opened was the signing of an MoU between Tanzania and India in July of last year.

The institution offers two full-time academic programs: a two-year Master of Technology in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and a four-year Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The institute started operating from a temporary site in November of last year.

Following the league, IIT Delhi formally agreed to establish a campus in Abu Dhabi by signing a deal with the UAE government.

The first Master’s program at the IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi campus will concentrate on energy transition and sustainability, representing a common goal of the UAE and India to use knowledge to advance prosperity on both sides of the border and worldwide well-being.

A few UK institutions are already in discussions with Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to investigate the prospect of an IIT establishing an offshore campus in the UK.

Requests to establish campuses have been made to many IITs by nations in South Asia and the Middle East.

A committee consisting of seventeen members was established by the federal government to expedite the establishment of IIT campuses abroad, enabling students from other countries to pursue technical education.

The standing committee of the IIT Council, chaired by Dr. K Radhakrishnan, made their recommendations in 2022.
