10 Dead Following Tourist Train Fire Near Madurai; Rs. 10 Million Ex Gratia Announced

The Bharat Gaurav tourist train caught fire on Saturday in Madurai, leaving ten persons dead and 20 wounded. The train was traveling from Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow to Rameswaram.

A Rs. 10 lakh ex-gratia has been issued by Southern Railway for the departed’s family. About a kilometer away from Madurai railway station, the train came to a halt. According to preliminary information, devotees onboard the train were cooking with a gas cylinder when the fire started.

The fire swiftly spread to other compartments after starting in one. In reaction, people hastily exited the train as the fire started to spread rapidly.

“This morning around 5:30 am, a coach that was stopped at Madurai Railway Station caught fire. Pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh were traveling in it. The gas cylinder exploded when they turned on the gas stove to make coffee. Nine corpses have so far been found, according to Madurai District Collector MS Sangeetha.

Six people from Uttar Pradesh have reportedly died in all, according to reports.

The fire started at 5:15 am in a private party coach at the Madurai yard, according to news agency ANI. B. Guganesan, Chief Public Relations Officer, Southern Railway, stated in an official statement that the incident was put out by 7:15 am. No other coaches suffered any harm.

The people on the private party carriage allegedly sneaked a gas cylinder, which started the fire, according to a statement made by the railways. When the carriage caught fire, several people exited. Some people had exited the station itself, the news agency claimed.
