93-year-old Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal, Shafiqur Rahman Barq, passes away

The Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, Shafiqur Rahman Barq, passed away on Tuesday while receiving care at a private hospital in Moradabad, according to the party. He was ninety-three. Shafiqur Rahman Barq’s health worsened following a protracted illness, leading to his admission to a private hospital in Moradabad.

At the hospital, he passed away. In 2019, four-time MLA Shafiqur Rahman Barq won his fifth election as an MP from Sambhal.

“It is very sorry to learn about the passing of Samajwadi Party senior leader and MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq Saheb. I hope his soul is at peace. May the surviving family members find the fortitude to endure this great loss. A heartfelt homage, the Samajwadi Party wrote on X.

The event occurred a few days after Shafiqur Rahman Barq, the party headed by Akhilesh Yadav, was nominated for the Sambhal seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Sending sympathies
In a post on X, Akhilesh Yadav expressed his sympathies. Akhilesh Yadav expressed his sadness at the passing of Mr. Shafiqur Rahman Barq Saheb, a prominent Samajwadi Party leader and multiple MP.

“May he find peace in his spirit. May the surviving family members find the fortitude to endure this great loss. Warm homage,” he continued.

Jayant Chaudhary, the head of Rashtriya Lok Dal, expressed his condolences on the senior SP politician’s passing. “On the passing of Shri Shafiqur Rahman Barq ji, my sympathies. He was a leader who really understood the people at the bottom,” he said.

Shafiqur Rahman Barq: who was he?
The oldest member of the present Lok Sabha, Shafiqur Rahman Barq, was also the SP’s choice to run for Sambhal in 2024.

Shafiqur Rahman Barq made news with his divisive remarks on “Vande Mataram” and the Taliban’s occupation of Afghanistan.

The Samajwadi party MP was arrested in August 2021 for drawing parallels between India’s liberation warriors and Taliban militants.

Shafiqur Rahman Barq came out in favor of the Afghan regime transition, stating that the Afghan people desire independence under the Taliban’s leadership and that the Taliban is fighting for their country’s liberation.
