Big accusation made by NCW leader in Sandeshkhali case: “DGP said can’t arrest Shah Jahan.”

Rekha Sharma, the head of the National Commission for Women, said on Tuesday that the director general of police in West Bengal had informed him that he could not detain local Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shah Jahan because “there is nothing against him.”

“It is huge that the DGP met me,” Sharma said to news agency ANI after meeting state top policeman Rajeev Kumar. This is my eighth or ninth visit to West Bengal, and the DGP never convenes. The DGP concurred that there hasn’t been enough… We recommended that every police officer in Sandeshkhali be replaced.”

Nonetheless, the head of the women’s panel said that after one or two phone conversations, Kumar’s attitude shifted. “He ended the meeting early. He objected to our taking Shah Jahan’s name. The DGP questioned us about how he could detain Shah Jahan when there was no evidence against him. He said that Shah Jahan, not him, should be arrested by the ED. What would the police look into if there is nothing against him? she asked.

“I believe DGP is powerless and has his hands constrained. We can only imagine the strain he’s under. Sharma said, “I believe he is sincere, but how can he function under duress?”

The TMC lead by Mamata Banerjee and the BJP have recently clashed over Sandeshkhali, a hamlet in the North 24 Parganas district, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. At their TMC office, a number of ladies have said that Sheikh Shah Jahan and his associates had sexually assaulted them while holding guns.

On Monday, the NCW head had gone to Sandeshkhali and met the victims. Following the visit, Sharma demanded that Mamata Banerjee resign and that President’s Rule be imposed in the state.

After his followers ambushed a group of Enforcement Directorate officers who had gone to Sandeshkhali to inspect Shah Jahan’s property in connection with the ration fraud, Shah Jahan, also known as “Bhai,” is now at large.

Sheikh Shah Jahan began his political career as a union leader at a brick kiln and subsequently joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) after it gained power in Bengal.
