Center in HC takes action to remove Sri Lankan criminals from the Rajiv case

The four Sri Lankans who were found guilty in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case will all be deported to Sri Lanka, the Union government has notified the Madras high court.

Four of the six defendants in the case—who were all convicted—were citizens of Sri Lanka and were freed by the Supreme Court in November.

The Foreigners Regional Registration Office in Chennai stated in his affidavit that the four Sri Lankan nationals, Santan, Sriharan alias Murugan, Jayakumar, and Rober Payas, “arrived in India illegally by boat and do not possess valid Sri Lankan travel documents, passport…,” and as a result, they have been held in the foreigners detention camp in Tamil Nadu’s Trichy until their deportation.

The department informed the single bench of judge N Seshasayee on Thursday that the Minister of External Affairs (MEA) has been informed to provide travel papers to the four Sri Lankans. The comments were based on the request of S Nalini, one of the recently freed prisoners, for the release of her husband, fellow prisoner Sriharan alias Murugan, so that they may apply for passports and go to Europe with their kid.

The government’s affidavit said, “Since the communication from MEA (Consular division) is awaited, her representation was kept pending at our end.”
